The Piano Bar Codez

by Kim Amedro

Dueling piano bars are fantastic places for loud, yet laid back nights filled with great music and banter. They bring you back to the old school bar scene where the whole bar is part of the same party.

But, there are some ground rules as to how they operate.

1) Cash Money: Always be armed with a stack of cash. I know, I know most of your money is all "plastic" a.k.a in various cards. Piano bars operate via the highest bid--NO GUARANTEE they will play your song.

2) Don't request "Piano Man."

3) Do request classic artists, just aim for the lesser played songs on "The Fox" and other classic rock stations. For example, when requesting Elton John think past "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man"--maybe request "Crocodile Rock."

4) Be prepared to be mocked for a risky song choice. Oh, and also be prepared for inappropriate language.

5) Test out a rap song or two--seriously, you would be surprised how many dueling pianists know "Gangster's Paradise."

6) Don't be shocked if they alter the melody or sing off key on purpose.

7) If you really want to hear your "Miley Cyrus" song pay up.
