Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve: 2 DIY Heart Shirts

This DIY is seriously as easy as it sounds. We saw it all over Pinterest and decided to give it a whirl. Here are the results of a crafty--but by no means clothing crafty--person's attempt.

1. Select a shirt. I would recommend sizing up and grabbing the larger shirt. The top should hang in the back and if it is too small, the humps of the heart will stretch out. No one wants stretched out humps, am I right?

2. Grab some paper, at least 12"x18". Again, regular size paper is going to be a little too small. Fold it in half, length wise, and trace half of the heart. Keep the heart long and narrow. Remember this from elementary school? Cut it out, open it up and voila: a heart worthy of a second grade valentine.

3. Cut the collar off the shirt and widen that neckline. You can even make it an "off the shoulder" top.

4. Center the heart between the two sleeves on the back of the shirt. Placement is key. Make sure your heart humps are at least in 1-1 1/2 inches away from the sleeves. Now trace away.

5. Cut it out. Literally, not figuratively.

Bad News: You need 2 shirts and a sewing machine for this one! Good news: It doesn't go beyond "Life Skills" level sewing.

1. Grab a Men's undershirt--or at least a shirt that has a little wiggle room. Also grab a colored shirt that you don't really care about anymore--this will be the color of the heart!

2. Cut off the collar about 1/4" from the seam.

3. Trace a heart in the CENTER of your shirt. You can free hand this, but be a little more "bubbly" with the shape. Also, keep the arches or humps of the heart steep.

4. Draw HORIZONTAL LINES thru the heart. Now, CUT the lines. Cut just to the outline of the heart.

5. Flip it inside out and grab the other shirt. With your colored shirt, cut a square piece big enough to cover the entire heart.

6. Tack that square piece over the heart--remember the white shirt is INSIDE OUT.

7. Flip it RIGHT SIDE out and get your sewing machine ready. Sew over the HORIZONTAL white strips of the heart. Use thread that matches the color of the "color pop" shirt.

8. Now follow the stencil/pencil outline of the heart and sew.

9. You can flip it inside out and clean up the square fabric or leave messy as is..no one can see it anyway.
